WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT THE SPIRIT

INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is the one who opens our eyes to the gospel and gives us faith to trust in Jesus. He causes us to be born again and gives us a new heart. When we trust in Jesus for salvation, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us. He guides us and leads us and empowers us.

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” – John 16:7

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit…” – Ephesians 1:13

MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is real, active, and vital for transformation and fruitful gospel ministry. He is the one who empowers the church for gospel proclamation and kingdom demonstration. He has the power to save and heal and restore in our midst. As such, we want more of his presence and power at work in our church.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” – Acts 1:8

GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit gives every Christian spiritual gifts for the good of the church. These gifts are manifestations of his presence among his people. All of the gifts mentioned in the New Testament are for today, including tongues and prophecy. He still works in these miraculous ways, and the Scriptures call us to pursue these gifts.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

“Pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy” – 1 Corinthians 14:1

HOW CAN I IDENTIFY MY SPIRITUAL GIFT(S)?

SOVEREIGN CIRCUMSTANCES

  • Where has God placed you?

EVIDENCE OF EDIFICATION

  • How is the Holy Spirit working through you for the common good?

CLARITY FROM COMMUNITY

  • What do those closest to you see as your gifts?

PASSIONS AND BURDENS

  • What makes you righteously angry? What do you want to fix? Where do you long to serve?

JUST DO IT!

“So, look for a need and meet it. Find a hurt and heal it. Be alert for a cry for help and answer it. Listen for the voice of God and speak it. Identify someone’s weakness and overcome it. Look for what’s missing and supply it. When you do, the power of God—the energizing, enabling, charismatic activity of the Holy Spirit—will equip you, perhaps only once, but possibly forever, to minister hope and encouragement to those in need. So if you’re still wondering what your gift(s) might be, act first and ask later” – Sam Storms
